ABOUT THE BRAND Barker Shoes have been an English tradition for 140 years, characterized by using carefully selected leathers and shaping the uppers by hand on the last. Traditional shoemaking methods, including slow natural drying and polishing, are used, resulting in a unique quality unmatched by machines.
The Barker brand began in 1880 when Arthur Barker, an innovative Northamptonshire boot maker, laid the foundation stone in a humble cottage. Unable to keep up with growing demand, he enlisted other craftsmen in surrounding villages to fulfill orders. Barker later invested in factory premises, eventually supplying the British army with boots during World War I.
The Barker brand flourished in the interwar years as Arthur's three sons expanded into new markets and territories. In 1947, a factory was built in Earls Barton for women's shoe production, while a separate sales company was established in 1950.
At Barker, craftsmen and fine materials are essential for creating good shoes. The craftspeople produce approximately 300,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually.
In 1987, Barker built a new factory and offices using local brick and stone, now one of the finest footwear factories in Europe. It occupies a 4.5-acre landscaped site in the heart of the village of Earls Barton, at the center of the British Shoe Making Industry with a highly skilled local labor pool.
The factory was specifically designed for crafting fine English shoes, with each section custom-built to achieve this goal. For example, the environment was arranged to provide good natural light, a prime requirement for leather grading, color matching, and consistently good stitching.
